What is Aluminum chloride

**Introduction to Aluminium Trichloride (AlCl₃)** Aluminium trichloride (AlCl₃) is a versatile inorganic compound widely used in industrial and chemical applications. It exists as a white crystalline solid in its anhydrous form and as a hexahydrate (AlCl₃·6H₂O) when hydrated. Anhydrous AlCl₃ is highly hygroscopic and acts as a strong Lewis acid, making it a key catalyst in Friedel-Crafts alkylation and acylation reactions in organic synthesis. It is also employed in the production of dyes, pharmaceuticals, and petrochemicals. Additionally, AlCl₃ serves as an electrolyte in aluminium refining and as a flocculant in water treatment. Due to its reactivity, proper handling is essential to avoid moisture exposure and ensure safety.

Preparation Process: Aluminium trichloride (AlCl₃) can be prepared by reacting aluminium metal with chlorine gas at high temperatures (around 650–750°C). The reaction proceeds as: **2Al + 3Cl₂ → 2AlCl₃** Alternatively, it can be synthesized by reacting aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃) with carbon and chlorine at 800–900°C: **Al₂O₃ + 3C + 3Cl₂ → 2AlCl₃ + 3CO** For anhydrous AlCl₃, the product is sublimed and collected in a cooled receiver. Hydrated forms are obtained by dissolving aluminium hydroxide in hydrochloric acid, followed by crystallization: **Al(OH)₃ + 3HCl → AlCl₃·6H₂O**. Handling requires dry conditions to prevent hydrolysis.

Usage Scenarios: Aluminium trichloride (AlCl₃) is primarily used as a catalyst in Friedel-Crafts reactions for alkylation and acylation in organic synthesis, enabling the formation of carbon-carbon bonds. It is also employed in the production of dyes, pharmaceuticals, and fragrances. In the petrochemical industry, AlCl₃ aids in refining processes like isomerization and polymerization. Additionally, it serves as a Lewis acid in inorganic and organometallic reactions. Other applications include its use in the manufacture of ethylbenzene and detergents. In metallurgy, it acts as a flux for aluminum. AlCl₃ is also utilized in water treatment and as an antiperspirant ingredient in personal care products.
